Steve Gourlay developed his passion for photography during his early years travelling the world as a competitive skateboarder, documenting the worlds best skaters. Continuing to hone his craft, inspiring decades of skateboarders both in Australia and internationally earning him the position as one of the worlds best skate photographers. This accolade definitely hasn’t gone to his head, as he is one of the nicest guys we at HX have ever met. Steve let us look around his light filled warehouse / office / photography studio.
Q. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
Today its kinda heavy music day, The Mark of Cain, an old Adelaide heavy band that Henry Rollins produced back in the early 90′s
Q. DESCRIBE YOUR AVERAGE DAY?
Ok this is a long winded sentence with poor punctuation…Get up put on some music make some breakfast walk the dog go to the studio check emails drink coffee shoot some photos or do post on a previous shoot drink more coffee keep in touch with clients call a skateboarder to organise a shoot play ping pong do some more work play some more ping pong.
Q. FIRST PAID JOB?
Woodstock Winery in the late 90′s seeing the shoot in its finished form was great
Hmm I think theirs been a few along the journey but one in particular was realising that the world just doesnt revolve around skate photography for me, I really love skateboarding because its my foundation and passion but also wanted to learn the craft of photography in other areas and use those skills to cross over into each area I enjoy shooting.
Q. WHAT IS THE MOST PRIZED POSSESSION IN YOUR SPACE?
my dog
Q. FAVOURITE BAR AND DRINK OF CHOICE?
Yellowbird in Windsor is the bar – It’s a great meeting place for all my friends and the rules for having fun are wide open.
Q. ITEMS YOU CANT LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT?
When I really think about this I’d love to say my camera or something cool but it’s actually my stupid phone, I seem to rely on this bit of technology far too much.
