]]>‘Pauls Boutique’, ‘License to Ill’, ‘Check Your Head’, ‘Ill Communication’ and ‘Hello Nasty’ were regular residents in my discman in those days. I guess I can say that the beastie boys were the soundtrack to all the years I spent skating at vic park, catching the bus home from school. And the seminal years of house parties, Girls in white pants, Boom Jeans, DC shoes and waiting outside the bottle shop for someone to buy us cigarettes and cheap beer.
So yeah, It does feel weird that someone who indirectly was a part of my growing up has passed. I’m not one to be all R.I.P this celebrity and that celebrity. People pass away every day. friends family etc etc. And I am not discrediting any of those people. but M.C.A although not knowing it, to me, was a huge part of growing up. Which essentially I am still trying to do.
Rest in POWER.

Pieces from Hostem’s most revered craftsmen and artisans embellish the lower floor of the store. From the tailor pioneering of Geoffrey B Small, accessory and jewellery design of Alice Waese, conceptual label MA+ and knitwear extraordinaires at Label Under Construction, the space also features the launch of Hostem’s new partnership with Maureen Doherty’s Kinnerton Street destination store ‘egg’ that will showcase a special selection of her unisex pieces.
Historic pieces play a role in the space not only through it’s antique suitcases that have been fully restored and relined in Swedish linens but also the piece de la resistance, a 19th century Chesterfield with church pews spawning from its centre, sits below a nest of Victorian pendant lights and a cluster of white ceiling roses.

]]>They say the best music is created in times of hardship. Hardship can be many different things in many different ways but everyone experiences hardship in one way or another over the course of a lifetime.
We all know music has the ability to influence the way people feel and for musicians it can be a way for them to deal with situations in life. Countless artists have produced music reflective of what’s happening around them, inside them, it’s the expression that’s important.
Now we’ve set the scene lets talk about the release..
As an artist Ghost has released 3 albums, multiple EP’s, singles, mix CD’s and remixed the likes of Benny Tones, Nicole Willis, Jehst, The Heavy, Coldcut, Bonobo, Verb T. His music has featured in films, he’s had remixes on PS3 games (The Heavy), he’s DJ’d and toured all over Europe and the UK, played Glastonbury, Hip Hop Kemp and DJ supported the likes of Public Enemy. He regularly gives away music as a thank you to the army of fans who have brought up more than 10,000 copies of his releases over the last 7 years. If you’ve listened to the music or seen any of the hundreds of reviews for those albums you’ll know Ghost has the ability to draw the listener into his multi layered beats and engage them on a deeper level than most. 2nd album ‘Freedom of Thought’ was critically acclaimed and took him out of his straight Hip Hop listenership into a wider audience without sacrificing his trademark melodic beats.
So December 2011, Ghost, now a proud father of 2 boys (one 2 years old and the other 5 months old) heard the news that his love and partner had a rare form of cancer. Although treatable, ahead lies 6 months of treatment and hopefully a happy outcome.
‘A Tale of Life in VI Parts’ was started when it became clear something might be wrong and tracks the emotional journey of contemplating life whilst waiting for results. Taking inspiration from composer Philip Glass, Ghost takes you to deep and dark places but maintains a strength of character throughout its 22 minutes. Heavily orchestrated strings, pianos and drums are the backdrop to the EP giving it a genuine cinematic feel.
‘A Tale of Life in VI Parts’ was made for the listener to enjoy from start to finish without pause, so we highly recommend you find a spot of quiet time in your schedule and turn off your mobile volume, switch the TV off, maybe even grab the headphones and enjoy.
This is ‘A Tale of Life in VI Parts’
This will be a name your price release with proceeds going to the appropriate Cancer charity, the emphasis being to raise awareness about cancer and the importance of seeing your doctor if you’re worried about a lump anywhere, do not think it will go away it won’t.

With eight solo albums to his name, bookended by 1991 platinum debut ‘Quik is the Name’, and 2011’s ‘The Book of David’ (Pitchfork’s Top 50 Albums of 2011), Quik has also been a regular collaborator with the likes of Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Snoop Dogg, Eazy-E and Nate Dogg. His remarkable production résumé also includes Jay-Z, Talib Kweli, Tony! Toni! Tone!, The Game and Janet Jackson, as well as features on the Menace II Society and Above the Rim soundtracks. The list goes on.

OSCAR MULERO [DETUND*, ESP, Tresor, Warm Up, Pole Records]
Oscar Mulero Djs career has been as prolific and long lasting as the development of dance music. As a key figure in this evolution,Oscar has always absorbed new trends and kept his finger on the pulse of electronic dance music, from the end of the 80’s right up to the present day.
It is impossible to understand the phenomenon of this DJ in Spain without taking into account his tireless work behind the decks for more than a decade. Oscar began as a DJ at the end of the 80’s in Madrid, at the most experimental clubs such as Impossible, Capital, Kitch and Babia playing Gothic Rock and EBM, the most important styles at the time. In the 90s he began to play at the legendary club New World (Madrid), the most influential after-hours.
By the middle of the 90s he helped to set up and run The Omen, a club which quickly became the most important place for hypnotic dance in Spain. The closures of this legendary club in 1995 maked a change in direction. He began to play all around Spain and gradually distanced himself from his characteristic sound he had previously favoured and moved towards a more basic minimal techno influenced by artists such as Joey Beltram and the new Detroit sound of Jeff Mills.
Oscar has become an icon, the maximum exponent of the hard techno sound in Spain and his popularity grew in an unstoppable geometric progression. Oscar’s sound became more and more focused, incorporating technos most advanced developments into his sets. His incredible skills behind the decks and his spectacular EQ techniques never leave the crowd indifferent. While his DJ schedule took him around the world, Oscar started producing and releasing his first tracks in 1999. In 2000 he decided to create his own label Warm Up Recordings. Oscar has also set up a new label, Pole Recordings which kept the Warm up theme alive but with modern sound design. His charisma and his professionalism have turned Oscar into something more than a DJ.
He is admired wherever he goes and nobody can deny his status in the Spanish techno scene.
We can only ask why has he not been here before?

Q Are you a morning bird or night owl?
I’ve been a night owl most of my life.
Q What are you currently listening to?
Pentagram, Cloudkicker, Agalloch, Sisters of Mercy, Blu, The Black Angels, Cult of Luna
Q 3 things you can’t live without?
The ability to make art, my laptop, and Kim Saigh
Q Your very first paid job?
Dishwasher at 15 years old
Q Describe your ideal day in LA?
Wake up around 1pm, walk to the studio, tattoo something fun for the day, have a nice meal with my girlfriend, relax, get back to the studio around midnight, paint until 6 am
Q What are you working on at the moment?
I’ve been working this past year on my largest scale painting- a 9 figure painting of the artist, Shige- for a solo show in July 2012 at the Joshua Liner Gallery in New York City. I’ve been working on drawing more for tattoos and seeing the progress from it. I’m also making an attempt to slow down a little bit and say no more often to things that aren’t important.
Q What is the process you go through for your paintings?
Spark an idea, draw a few thumbnails of potential compositions.
Set up a photo shoot, take that reference and re-compose, map out a painting. The first few days, attack the painting and get a general sense of direction, render and overanalyze for a long time, figure out how to finish the piece well enough to present it for a show with the constraints of a deadline.
Then nitpick and overanalyze what could have been better and try to apply those ideas and process’s in the next painting.
Q Who’s space would you like to see?
I would say Lucian Freud, but he just recently passed away. Jenny Saville’s space or Jerome Witkin’s space would be amazing to see.
Big thanks to Shawn for taking some time out to hang with us!
